The History of General Motors

General Motors, often referred to as GM, started out in 1908, being capitalized by William C. Durant. Right away, it bought the Buick Motor Company. This set a trend as GM bought Oldsmobile, Cadillac, and Oakland. Oakland’s name was later changed to Pontiac. Durant had been in the industry since 1886, and he had owned Ford dealerships prior to GM. He was soon forced out of the company by stockholders, which then led him to found the Chevrolet Motor Company with Louis Chevrolet. He later rejoined GM and brought the first Chevrolet to the manufacturer in 1918 with the 490.

GM surpassed Ford for sales by the late 1920s, mainly because of consumer financing after GMAC was founded. New ventures were added, and new lines were developed. After the war, GM continued to grow, creating six divisions under the company. The manufacturer competed with other popular models by developing new products, including the Chevy Camaro for the Ford Mustang.

Growth and expansion continued in the 1970s with the addition of the Chevy Chevette and Chevelle, the Cavalier and the Cobalt. After struggling in the 1980s and 1990s, GM turned its focus to trucks and SUVs in the early 2000s. Oldsmobile and Pontiac had been discontinued, and the truck lines continued to grow and thrive.
