Starter Service with Stanley Auto Group

Are you having problems getting your vehicle to start? There are a lot of reasons why a car won’t start, but problems with the starter itself are more common than you might think. If you live in or near Sweetwater, McGregor, or Gilmer, one way to know for sure is to bring your vehicle into one of our Stanley Auto Group locations. At Stanley Auto Group we are here for you for whatever your automotive needs.

The Role of Your Vehicle’s Starter

The starter is a small motor that gets its power from the battery of your vehicle. This little motor is the catalyst to get your car, truck, or SUV running. Between your starter motor and your battery, you’ll find a starter relay that transmits power. If your relay is faulty, your vehicle will not start, and you may need to have it towed.

What Are Some Symptoms of a Bad Starter?

One of the first and most common symptoms is clicking sounds when you turn the key. Other sounds may include whirring or grinding noises, but they may not make a noise at all, which indicates it is already past use.

A second symptom may be a dash light that stays lit, but beyond that, nothing else occurs and the engine doesn’t fire up. The engine may not turn over even after a jump start, which could also mean starter troubles.

Smoke coming from your vehicle’s hood is another possible sign. Your starter is part of your vehicle’s electrical system; thus, it can be subject to short circuits and blown fuses. When the engine won’t start after turning it over multiple times, the starter can overheat causing electrical issues. If you see smoke coming from your vehicle, call for help, and don’t try to start it again.

Finally, oil can leak onto the starter, causing problems. The starter is usually found on the passenger’s side or just below the exhaust manifold. If your vehicle is a four-wheel drive, it may be on the driver’s side above the transmission, below the manifold, or just under the intake manifold on other vehicles. If you look under the hood and see that the starter is covered in oil, you may have an oil leak causing the starter trouble.
