ABS Service at Stanley Auto Group

To keep your vehicle running at its best, it is important to have regularly scheduled maintenance performed on all the systems, including your Antilock Brake System (ABS). This system prevents your vehicle’s wheels from locking up, which can lead to skidding. If you live in or near Brownwood, Eastland, or Gilmer, you can bring your vehicle to Stanley Auto Group for all of your automotive repair and maintenance needs.

How Does ABS Work?

Under the right conditions, ABS uses electronic sensors and high-pressure pumps to measure your vehicle’s wheel slip, speed, and force when you apply the brakes. When these sensors detect a skid hazard, the ABS actually pumps the brakes for you faster and with more precision than is considered possible by human standards.
This automatic pumping of the brakes helps you stay in control of your vehicle by preventing your brakes from locking, so you can keep control of steering and maintain traction when you stop. On some vehicles, the ABS also decreases the braking distance when you stop.

Why is the ABS Light On?

There are many reasons why an ABS light may be on. It can be part of a routine self-check that occurs when the car is first started up or it could be one of these reasons below:
  • Broken or corroded ABS sensor.
  • Malfunctioning ABS computer model.
  • Dirty tone ring.
  • Bad wheel bearing.
  • Problem beyond the ABS and brake system that affects the ABS module or sensors like electrical problems or low car battery.

What Should I Do If My ABS Light Is On?

If the ABS and brake light comes on, for many vehicles this could mean that the brake system itself has an issue and that your vehicle may not be safe to drive. In this case, it is best to exit the road when it is safe to do so, brake carefully, and call for a tow. This isn’t always the case. Determining the reason behind your ABS light coming on is dependent on when the light comes on, such as:
  • In some vehicles an amber dashboard light serves as the ABS light.
  • If you are driving and the ABS comes on, it may mean that the ABS has stopped functioning at the time, but it may be temporary. If it comes on and stays on at the next startup, you should set up an appointment at Stanley Auto Group and have the ABS checked out.
  • If your ABS comes on and stays on at startup, it can mean the ABS self-test has discovered an issue. Your brakes may still function, but the ABS may not engage when it needs to and that may be affecting your safety. Set up an appointment with one of our Service Centers at Stanley Auto Group to have your ABS checked out.
  • If the light comes on and turns off at startup, your ABS is functioning normally.
