Why Wheel Alignment Matters

Alignment of the wheels impacts how the tires touch the road and how well your vehicle handles and steers. The alignment is the angle of the wheels when they make contact. The wheels themselves don’t change, but the suspension system is adjusted.
If the wheels are misaligned, it makes steering more challenging. The vehicle may pull in one direction or even shake as you drive. You’ll have to replace the tires more often as the tread wears down.

How to Check Alignment

There are some signs that your alignment needs adjusting.
  • Vehicle pulls to one side while driving
  • The steering wheel turns to one side even when you’re driving straight
  • Vehicle shakes or vibrates as you drive
  • Tire tread wears more on one side than the other
If you notice any of these signs, you should schedule a wheel alignment with Stanley Auto Group. We’ll get the alignment fixed and get you back on the road again.

Checking Alignment

When you bring your vehicle to a service department of a Stanley Auto Group dealer, our technicians will check the alignment. They look at the vehicle and wheels from different angles, using special equipment for wheel alignment testing.
The camber is checked to see if the tires tilt in or outward as if you are standing in front of the vehicle. If there is a tilt, the camber is out of alignment, which can happen when the wheel bearings or ball joints are worn. The outside or inside of the tire may wear more than in the center with this type of misalignment.
The toe is also tested to tell if the wheels are angled out or inward from above the vehicle. If the tire wears down and is sharp on one side and smooth on the other, it indicates that the toe may be out of alignment. The toe goes out of alignment if the tires aren’t inflated enough or if they don’t get rotated as they should.
The caster is the other test, which checks the angle of the steering axis and is viewed from the side of the vehicle. Caster alignment is important for taking corners and curves and helps with steering.
One of the most important parts of routine maintenance is tire inspections and service. Have the service teams at Stanley Auto Group check the tread and air pressure on your vehicle’s tires. They can also tell you if they see signs of wheels out of alignment.
