Throttle Body Service at Stanley Auto Group

When you drive your vehicle, you utilize several different systems that help you to get from place to place. Each system is comprised of several components to function effectively. One such system is the acceleration subsystem. This system gives you power and speed whenever you push the gas pedal. One component to this system that wears out in time is the throttle body. Without this, your accelerator can’t mix the fuel-air mixture very well. So, you can see how important this is in order for your car, truck, minivan, or SUV to function correctly. If you live in or near Brownwood, Gilmer, or Eastland, you can have your acceleration system checked out and diagnosed at Stanley Auto Group.

What Exactly is the Throttle Body?

Your acceleration system’s throttle body controls airflow into the engine. When you depress the accelerator, the throttle body opens to allow more air to enter the engine. This function also draws fuel to the engine to get it to accelerate. The throttle body is the main part of your acceleration system that gives your vehicle the gas it needs to move the vehicle. When the throttle body is damaged, your engine loses efficiency, power, and performance.

A Closer Look at How the Throttle Body Operates

When the throttle body does its job, the acceleration process happens like this:

  • The throttle body connects to the accelerator through a mechanical link in older vehicles and with an electronic link in more recent models. As you push the accelerator down, a throttle plate-which is located in the throttle body- opens to increase airflow to the engine.
  • Next, when the plate opens, a Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) attached to the plate sends an electronic signal to the Engine Control Module (ECM) to tell it the position of the plate.
  • After that, the ECM calculates the proper air-to-fuel ratio, so your engine responds accordingly. This part essentially monitors engine functions like air intake, ignition timing, and fuel injection which are all part of the acceleration process.
  • When the throttle plate opens, air volume increases into the intake manifold. The ECM then adjusts the fuel injector to allocate the proper amount of fuel for the increased air intake so that the mixture is at optimal levels for proper combustion. When you ease up on the pedal to slow down, the throttle plate closes to drop air intake and fuel delivery to the proper levels to reduce the speed and power when not required.

How Can I Tell if There is a Problem with my Throttle Body?

You will see a decrease in your fuel efficiency, fuel economy, acceleration, and engine performance if the throttle doesn’t work as it should. You may notice that your vehicle idles roughly, or it stalls when you accelerate, which can cause a potentially dangerous situation when you are out on the road.

If you are experiencing any of these problems above, you may need to bring your vehicle in to our Service Department at Stanley Auto Group for throttle body service. You can schedule service online or call us for an appointment. Let Stanley Auto Group get your vehicle running at its best today.
